heal.abstract | The aim of this thesis is the analysis and design of a tension, compression, torsion fatigue testing machine in order to be manufactured and used by the machine design laboratory of the National Technical University of Athens. This machine is designed to fulfill the needs of the laboratory for its academic goals taking into consideration the most widely used materials in mechanical engineering. The analysis begins with the design of load frame of the machine. Every machine element is selected or designed to withstand the maximum loads that are defined in the specifications of the machine and to give high stiffness to the load frame. Then a modal analysis is performed to specify the eigenfrequency of the frame and supporting columns are added to the frame to increase its first eigenfrequency. A special study is done for the mechanism of adjustment of the right plate in order that the machine can perform tests with a variety of lengths of the specimen. Except the load frame, the hydraulic system is designed and each specimen is selected from the market in compliance with the needs of the hydraulic system. The parts that are not selected but are obligatory to be used is the electromechanical motor, the hydraulic pump and the accumulator which are available in the laboratory. The operating conditions of the accumulator are defined in order to give maximum flow supply to the system for fatigue testing. Every hydraulic manifold which is necessary for the hydraulic system is designed as well. For the complete design of the machine grips were also selected from the market and the necessary fittings are done to make the grips compatible with the machine parts. Finally, a mathematical modelling of the hydraulic and mechanical systems is performed in order to find the proper control law for fatigue testing for a wide variety of conditions. | en |
