heal.abstract The purpose of this dissertation thesis is to present the significant impact of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that are both in implementation and research states, of contemporary road systems. It will also present the environmental and financial benefits resulting from their application. At first, we make a presentation of concepts related to those systems with a brief historical overview and also of their various forms ,according to their target and function (cooperative or not). Following is the analysis of the above mentioned categories and the definition of their contribution to driving behaviour, road safety and traffic safety management system. Next step is the presentation of the fundamental technologies used by those systems and also the main algorithm standards, that supporting them. Emphasis is being given to their “green” aspect through the optimization of the driving mode, that leads to the reduction of fuel emissions. Various models are being presented which with the appropriate parameters that reflect these emissions ,they permit the recording of the energy footprint of ITS. Finally, there are some case studies that have been implemented in various countries that can support the value of investing in ITS, using existing infrastructure and upgrading them, in contrast to the more conventional traffic decongestion investments, which require very high costs and are often prohibitive .In essence, in various fields applications of different types of intelligent systems, the benefits resulting from their use , such as accident prevention, reduced travel time, lower environmental burden, are quantified at present monetary values, and are compared with the corresponding costs through the benefit / cost analysis from which we gather useful conclusions.To summarize, an attempt is made to highlight the great importance of the application of ITS in saturated road networks, which with the use of technology and existing facilities ,not only they reduce accidents and save fuel for the end users, but they also ultimately improve the overall standard of living in the cities, reducing the new constructions and pollutant emissions , thus leading to a sustainable model of development of big cities. en
