heal.abstract The purpose of this thesis was to examine the effect of mining landscape’s characteristics on visual perception by recording and analyzing eye movements. For the purposes of the thesis, the Merenta quarry site, located at the southeast area of the Markopoulos Municipality of Mesogeia, was selected to be analyzed. With the help of the SURPAC mining software, alternative exploitation plans were developed from which the most appropriate, on the basis of the volume of reserves, was selected. Then, the impact on the landscape of both the existing form of the exploitation plan and the alternative design was estimated based on the LETOPID methodology using ArcGIS software. Then 12 three-dimensional photorealistic illustrations of the current situation and the alternative design were created. The illustrations differed in the landscape and were the visual stimuli used in the experimental procedure of recording and analyzing eye movements with the help of the ViewPoint Eye Tracker® software. The experiment was conducted at the specially designed area of the Eye tracker at the NTUA Cartography Laboratory and the visual stimuli that were caused to the volunteer participants during the observation of the 12 images were recorded. After recording eye movements, participants were asked to rank the 12 images in order of visual nuisance, from worst (visual) to best. The data obtained from the Eye tracker was analyzed in the OGAMA (OpenGazeAndMouseAnalyzer) software environment, and the classification was analyzed using a multiple linear regression model, in order to investigate the parameters that affect the visual preference. The interpretation of the results yielded interesting conclusions that need further clarification in the future. Specifically, while the alternative operating plan exhibits a lower degree of visual impact, it is not the preferred choice by participants in the experimental process. This initially confirms the complexity of the issue of visual impact as the individual details of a landscape appear to play an important role. It should be noted, finally, that the use of photorealistic imagery was applied for the first time and only for a specific distance from the quarry site. en
