heal.abstract Given the growing concerns over the greenhouse effect and the effect of many refrigerants on it,the Montreal Protocol sets out to replace some harmful refrigerants with more environmentally friendly ones. Towards this direction, the present study addresses the replacement of R134a refrigerant in a low-temperature Organic Rankine Cycle with other more environmentally friendly working fluids.For this reason , 5 pure fluids and 5 mixtures were evaluated for their enemrgy and exergy competitiveness. From an energy standpoint , the R245fa appears to outperform all other fluids both in the net electrical efficiency as well as the output power of expanders. The power output using R245fa in the nominal operating conditions of the plant was 8.99 kW with efficiency of 7.5%. Similarly from the economic perspective, the R245fa with 7200 operating hours/year leads to a payback period of 0.27 years if the investment profil is derived from the sale of surplus electricity generated by the replacement of the working fluid.A similar conclusion is based on the net present value (NPV) with R245fa operation to result in a NPV 120,126 euros for an investment life of 20 years. en
