Public space is an integral part of every city. Today, in several cities public space is designed, implemented, and serving an upgraded people's quality of life. Two exemplary cities, regarding public space, are Oslo and Copenhagen. The importance of public spaces in these cities is undisputed as they reflect much of their success as cities with a high quality of life. However, certain aspects of public spaces today raise concerns about the elimination of their role as places for social interaction. Through the analysis of six public space projects in Oslo and Copenhagen, this thesis explores their relation with the city and the citizens, their contribution to social cohesion, their public or semi-public qualities, but also issues of overplanning and the importance of flexibility. In Oslo, the public inclined roof of the Oslo Opera House, the semi-public spaces of Tjuvholmen and the Station Common and in Copenhagen, Superkilen Park, Amager Beach and Kalvebod Waves. A significant factor in the presentation of these projects is personal experience - 7 months in Oslo
and one week in Copenhagen - within the role of resident and visitor respectively, but most importantly within the role of space user. The personal experience in the cities and specifically the use of selected public spaces, in combination with literature, has led to the compilation of the present research work. The conclusions drawn include the reaffirmation of the undeniable importance of public space for cities but also the acceptance of criticism, be it a constructive instrument for optimizing city life.Public space is an integral part of every city.
