heal.abstract Background: Unhindered accessibility is, undeniably, every person's universal right, to move with ease, comfort, speed and security inside and through the built environment. After all, that is the reason why the subject of accessibility, in an absolute manner, continues to be examined and set through the lens of many standards. However, even in cases where standards and legal requirements are met, accessibility may vary depending on a person's unique capabilities. The purpose of this thesis, in broad terms, is to study the degree and ease of access to the NTUA facilities, for individuals with reduced mobility. After defining the methodology for measuring the accessibility of transitions between different points, the case of the School of Mechanical Engineering and broader spaces of the University Campus, are examined. Methodology: A methodology for evaluating transition and route accessibility has been developed, and it examines their quality through various levels and structural elements (e.g. transitions are made of the route and the points of start/arrival). Every element is evaluated based on selected individual characteristics. This study is formed with two individual groups of mobility impairment in mind (wheelchair users and persons of reduced mobility), always in relation with a reference user (ambulatory person). Scenarios with a representative nature are chosen, in order to test the accessibility in the typical daily movements of a student in the School of Mechanical Engineering. Every scenario is composed of subsequent transitions, each of which can be performed from one or more alternative paths. During the evaluation, a number of national and international standards are taken into account. Conclusions: Examining and evaluating the routes connecting different spaces, through the proposed methodology, found many faults that reduce spatial accessibility. Furthermore, several barriers and differences in accessibility are highlighted, which would have been unnoticed if investigated through the scope of standards and legislation alone. It is also concluded, that the findings of this study are in agreement with real concerns and opinions that were expressed during interviews with persons of reduced mobility. Value: A tool for assessing relative accessibility, can show in a “step-by-step” way, the same –and more– findings than what a typical assessment of absolute accessibility would show, especially when both are applied together. Interventions, of technical and organizational nature, are suggested, in order to further improve accessibility of the existing built environment. en
