heal.abstract | The object of the present dissertation is the study of the gabions, under static and seismic conditions, i.e., without the presence of an earthquake and with the presence of an earthquake, respectively. The impulses exerted on the wall by the wire boxes and the conditions under which this wall can slide, tip over or both slid and tip over are investigated. At the first part of the present study, an extensive literature review takes place in order to cover the theory behind the categories of retaining walls. Special attention is given to the category of gravity walls and more specifically to the gabion walls. Some general information about the wire boxes, in what applications they are used, as well as aspects about their quality are discussed in the next paragraphs. The advantages and disadvantages of wire boxes as well as their installation instructions are also listed. In addition, the theories generally used for finding the thrusts, the lateral ground pressures and the limiting states of functionality of the walls are explained. At the last part of this dissertation, Plaxis 2D software is discussed. This specific software uses the finite element method to solve various geotechnical problems in two-dimensions, from which the impulses, hydrostatic and geostatic tendencies were found. Those results were compared with the theoretical calculations made there of which are explained in detail. | en |
