heal.abstract	Για να μελετήσει κανείς τον Ερατοσθένη πρέπει να κάνει μια ολιστική πραγμάτευση του θέματος. Δεν θα πρέπει να παραβλεφθεί το γεγονός ότι ο εν λόγω μαθηματικός και στοχαστής, στην πορεία της ζωής του, είχε καταπιαστεί με πολλά και διάφορα πεδία. Στην παρούσα μελέτη σκοπός μας είναι να καταπιαστούμε όχι μόνο με το μαθηματικό, καθότι το πιο αποσαφηνισμένο στη βιβλιογραφία, αλλά με όλες τις πλευρές του Ερατοσθένη. Κύριος σκοπός της παρούσας διπλωματικής είναι να αναπτυχθεί επί μακρόν η πλευρά του μαθηματικού αλλά και του ποιητικού-φιλοσοφικού του έργου. Θα ξεκινήσουμε με μια ιστοριογραφική ανάλυση εκκινώντας από την αλεξανδρινή εποχή και τις τότε συγκροτηθείσες αυτοκρατορίες, για να αναφερθούμε στην εξέλιξη των επιστημών υπό το φως των τότε αντικειμενικών συνθηκών. Οι βιβλιοθήκες τότε θα παίξουν σημαντικό ρόλο στην ανάπτυξη των μαθηματικών και άλλων επιστημονικών κλάδων καθώς, όπως μαθαίνουμε, ο Ερατοσθένης θα προσπαθήσει να λύσει κάποια από τα λεγόμενα ‘’άλυτα προβλήματα’’, μεταξύ των οποίων και ο διπλασιασμός του κύβου. Παραθέτοντας στη συνέχεια και την πτυχή της ποιητικής-φιλοσοφικής ματιάς του, θα προσπαθήσουμε να γεφυρώσουμε τα δύο κομμάτια μέσα από τρία συγκεκριμένα ποιήματα του Ερατοσθένη. Ακριβώς επειδή ο ίδιος δεν ήταν μόνο μαθηματικός, γι΄ αυτόν, λοιπόν, τον λόγο, μας δείχνει πως ο διπλασιασμός του κύβου δεν αποτελούσε για εκείνον μόνο ένα μαθηματικό πρόβλημα προς επίλυση, αλλά και κάτι που μπορούσε να λάβει ποιητική μορφής έκφρασης. Σε αυτό το σημείο θα γίνει εκτενής ανάλυση στο περιεχόμενο της τραγικής ποίησης καθώς και στις ετυμολογικές και σημασιολογικές καταβολές της. Η σύνδεση με τον Αριστοτέλη, τον Πλάτωνα και τον Πυθαγόρα θα φανεί ως μια επιπλέον γραμμή σκέψης που διαπερνά τη φιλοσοφική πλευρά του.	el
heal.abstract	In order for someone to delve into Eratosthenes oeuvre, a holistic approach is needed. The fact that the renowned mathematician and philosopher had been engaged in several fields during his life cannot be overlooked. The aim of the present study is to explore the whole spectrum of Eratosthenes’ works, including the parts of it that eluded mathematics. The central objective of this dissertation is to research in-depth, not only the mathematical part of his work but also to put light on his philosophical and poetic work as well. The first part of this thesis is dedicated to drawing a historiographical analysis, starting from the Alexandrian era and the empires of this era, so as to discuss the development of science and the conditions that led to it. During this period, libraries played a major role in the advance of mathematics, among several other scientific disciplines. At this time, Eratosthenes attempted to solve some of the “Unsolved Problems” known as “classical problems” including the cube doubling problem. Moreover, by invoking Eratostheneses’ philosophical-poetic point of view, and by taking three particular poems of his as a case of study, we attempt to bridge all the parts of his work together. In other words, we will claim that the mathematical and the philosophical-poetic aspects of his oeuvre are connected to each other, and should be considered as a whole. In support of this statement, we will see that, for Eratosthenes, the cube doubling problem was not just a mathematical problem that needed to be solved, but it rather reaches to poetic and philosophical dimensions. On the side of this argument, we will analyze the content of tragic poetry, as well as its etymological and semantic origins. The interrelation with Aristotle, Plato, and Pythagoras will constitute an additional line of thinking which penetrates his philosophical mindset.	en
