heal.abstract In ship design and shipbuilding, stiffened panels are one of the most important structural assemblies. The accurate evaluation of their ultimate strength is of high interest, due to the important role they pose in the safety of the entire structure. The proposed work focuses on a probabilistic strength approach for the compression resistance of stiffened panels. The main purpose is to construct buckling surfaces as a function of the slenderness ratios, β and λ, that are associated with a given probability of failure. Uncertainty in the material properties and production-related geometric distortions have been probabilistically modeled by considering realistic statistical structures. To evaluate the ultimate stress of stiffened panels, nonlinear Finite Element Analyses are performed, based on design of experiments (DOE) sampling schemes. The generated surrogates were first validated and then used within a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) framework for uncertainty propagation. The probabilistic resistance of the stiffened pane; populations of interest was obtained by identifying a parametric statistical model based on the sample statistics. The obtained statistical structures allowed for the generalized reliability assessment of stiffened plates. Finally, the probabilistic buckling surfaces were constructed over the entire scantling range of interest through quadratic polynomial fitting and Response Surface Method. en
