heal.abstract To date, the established methodology for calculating the ultimate strength of a ship's girder has been based on Smith's proposal, under the effect of monotonic loading. However, this approach neglects the reduction in structural stiffness resulting from the cumulative plasticity induced by cyclic loads, such as those encountered in varying sea states. The principal aim of this thesis is to develop an analytical method capable of estimating the bending moment capacity of a structural section. The basic principles to be followed are the incremental-iterative method and the reformulation of the load-shortening curves for each member during cyclic loading as established by previous studies. Several new assumptions and parameters are introduced intended to account for the progressive reduction in the element's strength after each strain reversal. The developed algorithm is subsequently applied to the model of a box girder. Validation is initially completed via a comparison with previously published experimental and analytical results and then through a comparative analysis with the numerical model of a box girder exposed to identical loading conditions, which was designed in the framework of the current study. en
