heal.abstract | A large number of models attempt to explain the prevalence of matter over antimatter in the universe. In this thesis we present the problem in the context of the Standard Model and expand upon a possible solution known as baryogenesis through leptogenesis. Special care is given to baryon+lepton number violation from a quantum anomaly in the Standard Model and its connection to topological effects. These effects, known as sphaleron and instanton transitions, are both a key part to leptogenesis and objects of interest for current experimental efforts. We also highlight the necessity of beyond the SM physics to explain the baryon asymmetry. In the second part, we illustrate the core idea of leptogenesis. We start with the simplest SM extension, the Seesaw Type I Mechanism, which introduces heavy right-handed Majorana neutrino and explains the neutrino masses. Then we proceed by explaining the basic and most instructive model of leptogenesis in which a lepton asymmetry is generated by the out of equilibrium decay of the lightest heavy neutrino in the early Universe. We provide both analytic and numerical calculations for said model and address the full Boltzmann equations. Finally we note important flavor and spectator processes and briefly enumerate the most popular leptogenesis models. | en |
