heal.abstract The present thesis investigates the complex aerodynamics of sails, focusing on how sail twist affects performance in upwind sailing. Employing computational fluid dynamics, the research investigates the impact of varying sail twist on the critical lift and drag forces that govern sailing efficiency as well as the interaction of the main and jib sail. The study utilizes the MaPFlow CFD code created by the Aerodynamics Laboratory of National Technical University of Athens to simulate airflow over sails with different twist angles, analyzing the resulting aerodynamic forces and flow patterns. In addition, this research highlights critical relationships between sail twist, flow separation, and aerodynamic efficiency. More specifically, the findings indicate that a cautious manipulation of sail twist can substantially enhance sail performance by optimizing lift-to-drag ratios and diminishing flow separation phenomena. en
