As it is widely known, the European Union aims to reach “net zero” CO2 emissions by 2050. Furthermore, this evolutionary strategy affects one of the biggest, if not the biggest, powerhouses of transporting methods, the maritime industry. This decarbonization tactic has forced companies to spend millions of dollars to meet the stringent GHG emission reduction requirements. In particular, a great deal of research has been done into new fuels to be used by ships, carbon capture technologies and waste heat recovery systems. The goal of this Diploma Thesis is to evaluate and analyze some of the new and evolutionary technologies such as dual fuel LNG propulsion, Organic Rankine Cycle usage in a VLCC, in a thermodynamic spectrum and propose a variety of solutions in order to achieve the best possible CO2 reduction in a normal vessel’s trip in combination with the maximization of economic profits. |
