heal.abstract In recent years there have been a number of cases of severe oil spill accidents resulted from the transportation of oil with tanker vessels which have caused significant harm to the marine ecosystems as well as long-term effects on coastal communities, fishing industries, and tourism. the Oil Companies in response to the growing public concern about marine pollution, particularly by oil, after the Torrey Canyon incident in 1967 decided to establish OCIMF, International Marine Forum, a voluntary association of oil companies with an interest in shipment and terminalling of crude oil, oil products, petrochemicals and gas. The establishment of OCIMF aimed to promote the safe and efficient transportation of oil by sea by developing guidelines and best practices, conducting research, and fostering dialogue among industry members. Amongst other OCIMF’s Programmes, the International Safety Guide for Oil Tankers and Terminals (ISGOTT) was first issued in 1978 and has become one of the most impacting industry best practice guides on safety-related procedures for oil tankers and terminals. Nowadays the procedures outlined in ISGOTT have been adopted by the majority of the Ship Operators worldwide, and although they do not consist regulatory requirements, their implementation is regularly formally reviewed through TMSA Office reviews and onboard ship inspections by the Oil Companies. The main scope of the present diploma thesis is to analyse the last revision of ISGOTT and address the focus areas and the background of the main changes (Chapter 2) as well as to assess the contribution to the safety of the ships through a risk assessment process (Chapter 3) and any future improvements of the Guide (Chapter 4). en
