heal.abstract	This research focuses on the study of the fortified settlements of Kythera, with the aim of understanding their historical trajectory, the way in which their urban organization was shaped, and how they have influenced the insular space as a whole. These settlements, which emerged under different historical and cultural conditions, functioned as strategic centers for defense, administration, and trade. Within this historical framework, the study concentrates primarily on Palaiokhora, alongside the other two fortified towns, Mylopotamos and Chora. The fortified settlements were not merely stone walls and gates; they were living organisms. Within their fortifications, daily life coexisted with threat, and a sense of security with uncertainty. Today, however, the castles of Kythera lie in ruins and face significant preservation challenges. Neglect, the passage of time, and the impact of tourism constitute critical issues that must be addressed in order to safeguard these monuments. The lecture seeks to highlight the importance of the fortified settlements as an essential element of Kythera’s historical identity. The study of these settlements is not only an architectural and urban analysis, but also a comprehensive examination of how the past can be creatively linked to the present and the future.	el
heal.abstract	Η συγκεκριμένη έρευνα εστιάζει στην μελέτη των οχυρωμένων οικισμών των Κυθήρων, με σκοπό να κατανοήσουμε την ιστορική τους διαδρομή, τον τρόπο με το οποίο διαμορφώθηκε η πολεοδομική τους οργάνωση, και το πως επηρεάζουν τον νησιωτικό χώρο στο σύνολό του. Αυτοί οι οικισμοί που αναδύθηκαν με διαφορετικές ιστορικές και πολιτισμικές συνθήκες, λειτουργούσαν ως στρατηγικά κέντρα για την άμυνα, την διοίκηση και το εμπόριο. Σε αυτό το ιστορικό πλαίσιο η μελέτη θα επικεντρωθεί κυρίως στην Παλαιόχωρα παράλληλα με τις άλλες δύο οχυρωμένες πόλεις , του Μυλοποτάμου και της Χώρας. Οι οχυρωμένοι οικισμοί δεν ήταν μόνο πέτρινα τείχη και πύλες, ήταν ζωντανοί οργανισμοί. Μέσα στα τείχη τους συνυπήρχαν η καθημερινότητα με την απειλή και η ασφάλεια με την αβεβαιότητα. Πλέον, τα κάστρα των Κυθήρων είναι ερειπωμένα και αντιμετωπίζουν σημαντικές προκλήσεις διατήρησης. Η παραμέληση, η επίδραση του χρόνου και ο αντίκτυπος του τουρισμού , αποτελούν καίρια ζητήματα που πρέπει να αντιμετωπιστούν, ώστε να διασωθούν αυτά τα μνημεία. Η διάλεξη έχει στόχο να αναδείξει την σπουδαιότητα των οχυρωμένων οικισμών ως απαραίτητο στοιχείο της ιστορικής ταυτότητας των Κυθήρων. Η μελέτη αυτών των οικισμών δεν αποτελεί μόνο μια αρχιτεκτονική και πολεοδομική ανάλυση αλλά και μια καθολική εξέταση του τρόπου με τον οποίο το παρελθόν μπορεί να συνδεθεί δημιουργικά με το παρόν και το μέλλον.	el
