heal.abstract	The aim of this dissertation is to conceptualize a utopian framework for contemporary architecture with the intention of contributing to a meaningful change in the society in pursuit of emancipation within the context of the intelligent development of cities. To envisage new ways of urban living, this study analyzes contemporary world and criticizes its contradictory aspects. With a contemporary awareness towards the social contradictions that humanity has been confronting in the framework of industrial capitalism, in this study, the practice of architecture is understood as an instrument of political action in pursuit of social progress. To pursue urban emancipation as the process of achieving social justice, equality, and empowerment within urban space and practices, this research examines the modernization period starting from the First Industrial Revolution, focuses on the post-war era, and furthermore, scrutinizes current social, technological, and architectural developments, which are based on the transformations that happened with the Enlightenment, industrialization and modernity. Utopian architecture is discussed by tracing back experimental architectural projects of the second half of the twentieth century in Türkiye and Greece. To examine architecture’s roles and responsibilities in potential social change, this study investigates specific experimental architectural and urban projects aimed at advancing social justice in the context of post-war modernism. To grasp in what ways architecture can participate in practices of social emancipation, selected buildings and urban environments are examined in terms of how operatively they have contributed to the remediation of social contradictions. By engaging the findings derived from the scrutiny of the architectural practices of post-war period, this dissertation proposes an alternative approach regarding the notion of open city, as a critique of the implementations of smart city. Guidelines and spatial characteristics of open city are discussed in order to contribute to the development of a socially responsible urban outline that could be applied to any city. As a result of this scrutiny, this dissertation seeks out an open, collective approach towards the implementation of networking technologies in the continuous regeneration of urban spaces, by means of emancipatory, participatory processes.	en
