Το όριο στον Louis Kahn

Abstract

Η παρούσα εργασία εξετάζει το όριο στο έργο του Εσθονού αρχιτέκτονα Louis Kahn. Συγκεκριμένα, μελετούμε πώς στο έργο του το όριο αποκτά όγκο, αναπτύσσεται στις τρεις διαστάσεις, γίνεται χώρος. Για την κατανόηση του ορίου στο έργο του Kahn είναι θεμελιώδης ο ορισμός του για το χώρο ως μια οντότητα που παίρνει την ταυτότητά της από τη δομή και το φυσικό φως που κάθε φορά η δομή αυτή επιτρέπει. Έτσι πιο συγκεκριμένα, σκοπός αυτής της μελέτης γίνεται η ανάδειξη του τρόπου με τον οποίο οι γενέτειρες του χώρου του Kahn, δομή (structure) και φως (light) μορφώνουν και νοηματοδοτούν το όριό του. Επιλέγονται προς μελέτη δύο παραδείγματα από το κτισμένο έργο του Kahn, το Trenton Bath House, μια υποδομή αποδυτηρίων, και το συγκρότημα του κοινοβουλίου του Bangladesh. Σε αυτά η χωροποίηση του ορίου εξετάζεται τόσο σε επίπεδο κτιρίου (όλον) όσο και σε επίπεδο μονάδας κτιρίου (επιμέρους).

This essay examines the notion of the limit in the work of the Estonian architect Louis Kahn. More specifically, we study how the limit in his work has volume, becomes three- dimensional, transforms into space. Fundamental in understanding the limit in Kahn’s work is his definition of space as an entity gaining identity through the structure and the natural light that this structure permits. Hence, this study aims to show how Kahn’s space forming structure and light shape and give meaning to his limit. We choose two examples of Kahn’s built work, the Trenton Bath House and the National Assembly Building of Bangladesh, to study the spatial nature of the limit in both building and building unit levels.
