Semicrystalline crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) hydrogels in the form of films were prepared by electron beam irradiation and a subsequent slow dehydration process at 25 ± 1°, using various drying agents. Nucleation and crystallization started after an induction time varying between 10 and 108 hr and proceeded very quickly, but always depending on the rate of evaporation of water. For the region of main growth of crystallites (degrees of crystallinity between 5 and 35%), the crystallization rate could be expressed by an Avrami equation; it was shown that the crystallization rate is lower for more densely crosslinked polymers under the same drying conditions. © 1976. |
