The process of a moving transverse crack which coalesces with different types of material discontinuities (interfaces in multiphase specimens, longitudinal cracks, small holes, etc), and the related process of momentary crack-arrest was investigated. All momentary crack-arrest processes seem to belong to a specific type of crack arrest which depends mainly on the rapid transfer of the kinetic and strain energies stored at the propagating crack-tip, from the tip of the crack to the existing discontinuity, as the crack approaches it. © 1981. |
