The determination of the direction θp of crack propagation in mixed-mode brittle fracture is shown that can be based on the maximization of principal stresses. On the other hand, the corresponding load at fracture can be determined by summing up the projections of normal and tangential components along a small circle centered at the crack tip, on the ""direction of opening forces,"" i.e. perpendicular to the θp direction. © 1986. |
