heal.abstract	The potential use of main-frame computers to carry out algebraic operations by means of the ALTRAN language and system is discussed with reference to the Levy-Nadai method for plate bending. The repetitive cycles of simultaneous-equation sets required by this essentially analytical technique can be eliminated by solving a single set in symbolic form, thus generating a truly closed-form solution. The latter may then be used to solve the given problem on a much smaller computational device, such as a desk calculator. The algebraic solution should also be stored for future use on similar problems, with consequent savings in data preparation, storage, and execution time. © 1986.	en
