A graphical method is proposed for the assessment of the progress of flotation processes, in the form of an operating line (OL) on which operating points (OP) denote the compositions of the cumulative concentrates and of the tailings. The graph accommodates both direct and reverse flotation; a separation index (S) is defined which is associated with the operating points and is calculated from formulae for direct (SD) or reverse (SR) flotation. The formulae reflect concentrates and tailings compositions; the index has boundary values S = 1 for a pure component and S = 0 for a 1:1 mixture of ash and coal. Efficiencies of separation and optimum separation conditions are readily determined, and the increase in S provides a comparison between different processes. Flotation tests on fresh lignite are reported using three flotation systems. Recoveries of 60-98% were obtained with 9-14% ash reduction; in the best tests increases in the separation index varied between 0.18 and 0.32. © 1986. |
