The effect of water absorption on the flexural modulus and corresponding flexural strength of iron-powder-reinforced epoxy composites has been studied for periods of immersion of up to 10 days in water at several temperatures. The observed changes in flexural modulus and corresponding flexural strength indicate a strong dependence of these properties on the water-conditioning temperature. It was found that, depending on the water-conditioning temperature, the presence of water molecules may either reduce or enhance the flexural properties of the composite. This behavior is explained in terms of the combined action of interfacial debonding and moisture-induced plasticization. |
