heal.abstract	A new computational method for the determination of the steady state of a non-linear dynamic system, called the ""artificial damping method"" (ADM), is discussed. The method is based on the idea of introducing an appropriate artificial damping into the harmonically excited non-linear dynamic system, to reduce the transient response time and thus the time needed to reach, or calculate, the steady state. It is expected that the method will be valid for all kinds of non-linear systems and all kinds of non-linearities except bifurcation. The artificial damping method and corresponding numerical results are presented. © 1988 Academic Press Limited.	en
