We calculate the cross sections p»p or pp(bl1)(b»l2)+X for like- and unlike-sign dileptons, l1l2=l±l±,l±l, due to b-quark production, from CERN Collider to Superconducting Super Collider energies, taking into account (i) the QCD fusion processes qq», ggbb», (ii) the tree-level contributions to the decays b,c+X and the cascade process bc, the semileptonic branching fraction of the charm quark being fixed by data, and (iii) the fragmentation processes bB, softening the muon distributions by p/p20%. The small contributions due to charm production are also taken, approximately, into account. We present analytic formulas, admitting a simple intuitive interpretation, which, within theoretical uncertainties, agree with present measurements of the dimuon cross section at the CERN Collider, as well as with the results of Monte Carlo estimates of the ±±/+- ratio (given no B0-B» 0 mixing) and the fraction of dimuons arising from cc» production. Our procedure is useful for calculating the standard dilepton background, e.g., to B0-B»0 oscillations or new-particle signatures at a given energy for the desired transverse-momentum and invariant-mass cuts, without Monte Carlo simulations. © 1988 The American Physical Society. |
