The exchange of data between different geometric modeling systems frequently requires approximate conversions of rational Bézier and B-spline surface patches to lower degree integral B-spline representations. High-degree piecewise polynomial patches arise from fitting applications and indirectly from processing of trimmed patches. Accurate conversion of such geometries to lower degree integral representations is required in many modeling environments. The objective of this paper is to provide an efficient algorithm for the approximation of nonuniform rational B-spline surface patches with non-uniform integral B-spline patches of lower degree. Global error bounds, necessary in verifying accurate approximation, are derived. © 1989. |
