When a crack is propagating in an elastic medium under plane-stress conditions Rayleigh waves are continuously engendered around the advancing crack tip. As the crack attains a bounding surface of the plate reflected Rayleigh waves are also traveling backwards carrying a significant amount of elastic strain energy. In this paper the method of transmitted caustics was used to evaluate accurately the amounts of energy and energy release rates carried with these reflected waves. It was shown that the caustic formed at the intersection of the Rayleigh front and the crack flanks is a sensitive gauge to detect and measure these energies whose amounts are significant attaining 4-10% of their values during the crack propagation. © 1989. |
