Intense de-watering in the South Field open pit lignite mine, which is located at the Ptolemais Basin, Greece is required to lower the water table of the aquifer of the overburden. A mathematical groundwater model was constructed to predict the pumping rates of the de-watering wells, and their numbers and location. Due to the complexity of the geological and hydrogeological conditions, and the lack of necessary information locally, many assumptions were made. Consequently, sensitivity analysis and calibration were required to identify the crucial parameters affecting the results of the hydrogeological model, focus on the parameters and calibrate the model for better results. |
