heal.abstract The purpose of the present study is the short presentation of the clinico-histopathological picture of the most frequent breast diseases and the detection of those which could coexist with other breast diseases tumorous or not, benign or malignant. 642 cases concerning different categories of breast diseases, were histologically examined during a five-year period, according to a) the affected breast (right, left, or both), b) the patient's age, c) the histologic type, and d) the presence of other breast disease, benign or malignant. Particularly, in malignant diseases, except the above parameters, were also examined a) the histological type of breast cancer in association with the grade of cell differentiation, b) the presence of multifocal breast cancer, and c) the association of breast histological type and grade of cell differentiation with the presence or absence of lymph nodes metastases. The retrospective analytical study of 642 cases showed that benign breast diseases are more frequent than the malignant ones (percentage of 59.2% and 40.8% accordingly). Benign breast lesions are usually located in the right breast (47.7%) and are often observed at the age of 41-50 years old (28.5%, p<0.005), while a smaller percentage (0.3%) is observed in old women (>81yrs). Fibrocystic disease is the most frequent benign breast lesion, comprises the 51.6% of benign diseases and has the ability to be associated with other benign breast lesions such as a) sclerosing adenosis (14.8%), b) intratubular fibroadenoma (5.6%), c) intraductal papilloma (2.5%), d) fat necrosis (2.5%), e) duct ectasia (0.5%) and lipoma (0.5%). As it concerns the malignant breast diseases, breast cancer is the most frequent disease with major histologic types the invasive ductal (80%) cancer, the lobular (14.1%) and the lobular-ductal cancer (5.9%), whereas diseases like liposarcoma (0.38%) and lymphoblastic/lymphocytic lymphoma (0.38), are rare. Median patient's age was 57.65 yrs (p=0000) with older and younger ages the 88 yrs and 31 yrs accordingly. 49.4% of the patients had cancer located in right breast, 97.7% had invasive cancer, while the 2.3% had a multifocal one. Invasive ductal breast cancer (IDC) had a 31.5% percentage of moderate cell differentiation (Grade II) and showed a high percentage of lymph nodes metastases (52%, p=0.071). Fibrocystic breast disease has a 34% association with malignant breast lesions and is more often associated with ductal (26.1%) than lobular (5.3%) breast carcinomas Other benign lesions, such as sclerosing adenosis, fibroadenomas, fat necrosis and lipoma, are hardly associated (5%) and usually appear with specific histologic types (invasive ductal and non invasive or in situ lobular) breast cancer. Conclusively, a positive association between specific histologic types of breast diseases is observed. This association concerns both benign and malignant breast lesions, sharing an important role in the development of the most frequent female malignancy, the breast cancer. en
