heal.abstract	This article discusses the role of PANACEIA interactive TV (iTV) (IST 2001-33369), which exploits the virtues and capabilities of both digital iTV and information technology (IT) in the field of healthcare, and even more specifically in the field of homecare and healthcare on demand (for monitoring and education applications). The purpose is to facilitate essential lifestyle changes and to promote compliance with appropriate scientifically-sound self-care recommendations. The means to achieve these goals requires major innovations and advances in diverse fields and it is based on technological, health services and business models. We evaluate the fundamental features of the suggested platform/infrastructure and analyse the innovative character of the system. Particular emphasis is given to the description of the core system architecture. Moreover, we explain and assess the development of specific digital TV services offered, especially for the delivery of the homecare environment.	en
