Abstract

A study for the unique villages of Ikaria island with emphasis on the medieval period. A historical, folklore, architectural and spatial research in order to understand all the factors that shaped the Ikarian culture. Ikaria was indeed another, different, world that existed until the beginning of last century. The way of living, the social relations, the solidarity, the self-organization and many other features of this very interesting society, are studied in order to understand how Ikaria was linked to the concept of utopia around the world and how this counterfactual example could inspire us today.
