The main subject of this paper is to determine the behavior factor of masonry construction with clay bricks in an in-plane earthquake.
The paper is based on results obtained from experiments in masonry constructions, which took place at the Earthquake Engineering Laboratory of NTUA. The program Abaqus is also used, in order to compare the behavior of models with the real construction and to calculate additional parameters necessary for the whole process.
Three different methodologies are used to calculate the ductility μ of the constructions: the Italian Code (OPCM 3274 [2005]), the Eurocode 8, and the method of Paulay and Priestley. The ductility of the constructions was determined in the multi-degrees of freedom- construction as well as in equivalent one degree of freedom construction. In addition, two cases are examined in the equivalent construction: the normal in height distribution and the modal distribution in the cracked section. In order to convert the multi-degrees of freedom construction to the equivalent one degree of freedom, the method N2 is used.
Furthermore the overstrength of the constructions is calculated in three different cases: in the uncracked section, in the cracked section with stiffness equal to the half of the initial and in the cracked section with stiffness equal to the stiffness of the first branch of the bilinear curve.
Finally, the behavior factor of the three constructions is calculated for all the cases that are mentioned above.
