heal.abstract | Electric load balance is a significant study performed at the design stage of a ship determining her electric power plant. However, this analysis is limited to the active power part only. In this diploma thesis extended electric load balance is conducted including also the reactive power. The methodology is enriched by a real case study scenario obtained from an LPG ship, which cannot meet power demands. Thus, potential solutions are proposed, with their advantages and disadvantages. In this study, theoretical background is presented, introducing terms like active power, reactive power, power factor, power triangle etc. Furthermore, basic principles of synchronous and asynchronous motors are described. Last but not least, LPG’s cargo compressors are studied, as they are large energy intensive power motors with low power factor. | en |
